2019 has been the year of social media production. A trend I have noticed is that many YouTube content creators have resorted to the platform due to being poorly treated in different environments being able to speak out about it on the platform. Usually such stories gather a lot of attention which boosts the creator into making more and better content i.e. better production.
The problem with media production however is that you eventually run out of things to talk about. The thing that made the person a hit eventually loses its glory or the person grows up and realizes the responsibility of having followers. Everything that goes up must come down and the content creator eventually falls back into his or hers old ways of being, especially if it is done alone.
2020 will be the year of meta-producing. I predict many content creators will find meaning in helping their followers instead of themselves into following their footsteps. They will resort to “selling the shovel”. I believe there will be lots of people selling services such as setting up a YouTube-studio or helping people take photos for their Instagram.
Everyone will be able to “make it” granted they have a story to tell. Stories is the new currency of the internet going into the next decade and content creation itself will be devalued. It will no longer be enough to be charismatic or loud but you actually have to share something of value to the world.
